I Doubled My Protein Intake And My Skin Has Never Looked Better

Somewhere between the green juice craze and the collagen boom, protein quietly stole the spotlight. My Instagram feed, once full of mason jars and kale smoothies, now looks like a parade of shaker bottles, frothy protein coffees, and “just whipped this up” protein mug cakes. Even in the gym, women are trading brownie-batter protein recipes with the same excitement we used to reserve for açai bowls. Protein is no longer tucked away in the bodybuilding aisle—it’s slipped into beauty culture, right next to retinoids and red-light masks, as something you’re supposed to have a stance on.

For me, it started as an experiment. I wasn’t chasing gains or a marathon finish line just curiosity. I doubled my daily protein intake, making a conscious effort to get enough at every meal, and within weeks something unexpected happened: my skin started to glow.I’m talking plumper, smoother, healthier-looking skin the kind where friends ask what new serum you’re using. Only this time, it wasn’t a serum. It was scrambled eggs, Greek yogurt, chicken, lentils, and yes, the occasional vanilla protein shake.

Here’s what surprised me most: protein didn’t just make me feel stronger, it changed how my skin behaved. The breakouts I’d been quietly battling started to settle down. My complexion looked less dull. Makeup went on smoother. And for the first time in a long time, I wasn’t reaching for highlighter to fake radiance my skin was doing it on its own.

Maybe it makes sense. Skin, after all, is built on protein collagen and keratin don’t just appear out of nowhere. But we rarely connect what’s on our plate to what’s happening in the mirror. We’ll spend hundreds on serums, masks, and treatments, while ignoring the simple fact that glowing skin might just need more nourishment from the inside.

Now, I’m not saying protein is some miracle beauty cure, or that guzzling shakes will erase every skin concern. But for me, eating more of it has been transformative in a way no “miracle cream” ever was. And in a wellness world that often overcomplicates things, there’s something refreshing about a fix that’s as straightforward as eating an extra egg.

Protein might be having a cultural moment but for me, it’s turned into a personal skincare essential.
