Winter nail colors have a kind of magic to them: moody, glamorous, sometimes a little gothic, sometimes soft and sparkling like frost on a windowpane. In the colder months, nail polish becomes more than a beauty choice; it’s a seasonal statement. Think deep navy that mirrors the 5 p.m. sunset, a glossy bordeaux that feels like velvet in bottle form, or an inky midnight shade that whispers rebellion.
Some winter colors match the world outside, quiet, dusky, and atmospheric. Others feel like emotional shorthand: a metallic brown for a contemplative mood, or a vinyl-black manicure that exudes rock-and-roll confidence.
One person who understands this better than most is Megan Louise, frontwoman of Desire and a longtime disciple of dark, dramatic nails. We caught her just after she landed from Paris, where she had been DJ’ing the reopening of Chanel’s boutique on Rue Saint-Honoré. She laughed as she recalled her early love for shadowy nail shades.
“My mom hated it. And now, at 37, I think I still chase that tiny spark of rebellion.”
To Louise, a dark manicure is the beauty equivalent of a little black dress, simple, iconic, instantly transformative.
Her go-to winter shade? Chanel’s Le Vernis in Rhythm, a celestial, almost cosmic blue she has sworn by for years. But she admits there’s a new obsession lingering in her mind: the Hermès polish in Brun Bistre. The crush began during a recent European tour.
“My friend Ava Vegas in Berlin had it sitting on her coffee table,” Louise recalls. “I tried it once and couldn’t stop thinking about it. It’s this rich, metallic brown lush, decadent, the perfect moody winter color.”
Whether you're drawn to vampy reds, metallic brunettes, icy silvers, or deep-space blues, this season’s nail palette is wide open. Winter, after all, is the perfect excuse to experiment with colors that feel a bit more daring, a bit more dramatic, and completely delicious on your fingertips.
