The Glamour Starts When the Curtain Drops: Inside Lights Out's Backstage Beauty Ritual: Nat "King" Cole

At the New York Theatre Workshop, the last note fades, the lights go down, and the cheers are loud. Lights Out: Backstage, the ensemble is virtually bouncing with excitement and adrenaline as Nat "King" Cole just finished another incredible performance.

However, there is a vital pause between the stage and the celebration before the actors transition into party gear. This is an intimate, backstage beauty routine that transforms the gritty, theatrical performance into glamorous after-party attire.

Greetings from the Valentino Beauty glam room, where celebrating and self-expression are equally important aspects of post-show metamorphosis.

The 14-person group enters this glowing little haven immediately after removing the thick layers of stage makeup, which is meant to survive perspiration, tears, and time while projecting emotion under intense lighting. There is a lively yet focused atmosphere. Glowing complexion, velvety lips, and a whirl of contemporary glitz have replaced the greasepaint of Nat Cole's 1950s.

Seeing artists transition from character to self is a thrilling experience. The mirrors in the dressing rooms show layers being shed and recovered in addition to faces. Under the careful control of Valentino Beauty's glamorous team, contours are softer, glitter is injected where weariness may have persisted, and scents fill the air like punctuation on a spectacular night.

Ritual is more important than vanity. It is about the gradual, decadent luxury of reclaiming your identity after spending hours in another person's shoes.

And what better way to celebrate a strong performance than to feel confident, radiant, and camera-ready as you step into your own skin?

The cast is radiant as they exit the glamorous chamber into the night, not just from the skillfully applied highlighter but also from the afterglow of the song, tale, and standing ovations.

The show may end at curtain call for Lights Out, but the beauty of it all endures long after the lights have gone out.
